Silence Q&A with Karina Shor

Your art style is so expressive. What role does art play in your life?

Art and life are synonyms to me. I make art every day of my life, whether it is the actual process of drawing, painting, or writing. Or trying to remember an experience with all the feelings and colors it brings to use later for art making. When you are an artist, art is life and life is art.

You write about feeling like an outsider both in Moldova and in Israel. How do you think that shaped who you are?

Being an outsider has given me the gift of being an avid observer. When you are trying to fit in all the time, you watch others and try to analyze and learn their ways. To be a good observer is to be a good artist. You notice the small things, internalize them, and later portray the human experience in a relatable way. In my opinion, being a good artist, and maybe even being a good human, is embracing the difficult and growing and learning from everything.

You write about your desire to look a certain way as a teenager. What advice would you give your teenage self if you could?

I would love to send a message to my younger self that nothing will ever be perfect, perfection doesn’t exist. We exist over time in a changing world. Even the way we look is not fixed. It is forever bound to change every second and is always affected by how we feel inside. We are all different and beautiful. That is the law of nature.

What kind of impact do you hope this book might have on your readers’ lives?

I hope this book brings my readers the understanding that life is long, and that we can— and will change. Life is a balance with both good and bad in it. Darkness exists so we can appreciate the light. And most importantly, that we are not alone in the world. We can trust that whatever we have been through, someone has been through the same. And that it is a gift to use our experience to help others through empathy.
