My hope is that this Version 4.1 allows for some additional, beneficial information for the power system professional and student. The power industry is currently striving for a net-zero emission goal by the mid-2030s. Climate change, the environment, and health of the citizenry drive this goal and endeavor for a cleaner resource mix. In the interim system, before the possibility of going to all net-zero resources and battery storage, the need for consistent-fuel resources cannot be denied or minimized. Reliability of the power system must be maintained. This book aims to capture some concepts of the power delivery system including synchronous generators and inertia studies that point to the importance of the consistent-fuel resources, such as natural gas. Natural gas becomes essential for the interim period since it has less emissions than coal and is safer than nuclear in the eyes of the environmentalist and the public at large. The synchronous machine is a complex working of Faraday’s Law. The author’s approach is more a basic look at these machines, the synchronous generator and motor; however, much more complex discussions can be found in textbooks totally devoted to the subject. The author, also, strives for this to be a secondary resource to the EPRI Power System Dynamics Tutorial [1], Sarma and Glover [2], Gross [3], Blackburn [4], and all the great, higher-level text books that universities and professionals across the world have used for decades. This book is more of a supplement to those important resources. The intention is to clarify and supplement some power delivery concepts for the benefit of the student and the power engineer.
